ProtonVPN has earned a reputation as a trustworthy, privacy-first VPN service built by the same team behind ProtonMail. Headquartered in Switzerland, Proton AG benefits from strong privacy laws and positions ProtonVPN as a tool for secure communication, online privacy, and censorship circumvention. Core features and security At the heart of ProtonVPN is strong encryption and a clear no-logs policy. The service supports modern VPN protocols (including WireGuard and OpenVPN), ensuring a balance of speed and security across platforms. ProtonVPN also offers a built-in kill switch that blocks traffic if the VPN connection drops, preventing accidental exposure of your real IP address. Secure Core is one of ProtonVPN’s distinguishing features: traffic is routed through privacy-friendly countries and Proton-operated servers before exiting to the public internet. This multi-hop approach protects users from certain types of network-based surveillance and helps reduce the risk of targeted attacks on exit servers. ProtonVPN’s apps and clients are open source and have undergone independent audits, increasing transparency and trust. Privacy-oriented extras ProtonVPN includes privacy-focused extras such as NetShield, an optional DNS-level ad and malware blocker that can improve security and reduce unwanted tracking. The service also supports Tor over VPN for users who want to route traffic into the Tor network without running the Tor Browser directly. For P2P users and streamers, ProtonVPN designates specific servers optimized for torrenting and accessing geo-restricted content on popular streaming platforms—though performance may vary depending on location and server load. Plans and accessibility ProtonVPN offers a free tier with a limited selection of servers and modest speeds—useful for basic privacy needs or testing the service. Paid tiers expand server access, increase connection speeds, allow streaming and P2P on more servers, and unlock Secure Core and NetShield. Proton’s higher-tier plans may also bundle other Proton services for users who want a complete privacy suite. Usability and support ProtonVPN provides apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus manual configuration for routers. The interface is designed to be approachable for beginners while offering advanced settings for experienced users, such as split tunneling and custom DNS. Customer support resources include guides, an FAQ, and email support for paid plans. Conclusion ProtonVPN is a compelling option for users who prioritize privacy and transparency. Its Swiss jurisdiction, no-logs stance, open-source clients, and unique Secure Core architecture make it particularly attractive for those seeking strong protections against surveillance and tracking. As with any VPN, weigh the features, server availability, and pricing tiers against your needs to choose the right plan.#1#
