ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by Proton AG, the same company behind ProtonMail. Launched with privacy and security as primary goals, ProtonVPN aims to give users safer, more private access to the internet by encrypting connections and routing traffic through servers in multiple countries. Its Swiss headquarters and commitment to a no-logs policy help position it as a privacy-conscious choice for individuals and organizations. Security and privacy ProtonVPN emphasizes privacy by combining a strict no-logs policy with several technical and organizational safeguards. Its servers are primarily diskless (RAM-only), meaning data is not stored permanently on physical drives and is wiped on reboot. The service supports modern VPN protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2; WireGuard is often recommended for a good balance of speed and strong cryptography. ProtonVPN also offers a kill switch, DNS leak protection, and encrypted core routing called Secure Core — a multi-hop design that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before it exits to the public internet, reducing the risk of traffic correlation attacks. Features and platform support ProtonVPN provides user-friendly apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, along with manual setup guides for routers and other devices. Additional features include split tunneling (choose which apps use the VPN), Tor over VPN (direct access to the Tor network without a separate browser), and P2P-optimized servers for torrenting. The client software is open-source and has undergone third-party audits, which increases transparency and helps validate security claims. Plans and pricing One of ProtonVPN’s distinguishing elements is its tiered approach. There is a free plan with limited servers and speed that’s suitable for light use and testing the service; paid plans unlock more servers, higher speeds, Secure Core access, streaming and P2P-optimized servers, and multi-device support. Paid tiers typically include options for individual users and families. Pricing and feature sets change over time, so reviewing current plan details on ProtonVPN’s website is recommended. Performance and use cases Thanks to WireGuard and a growing server network, ProtonVPN can provide competitive performance for streaming, remote work, gaming, and torrenting. The Secure Core multi-hop routes add latency but benefit users who prioritize anonymity. For users in restrictive regions, ProtonVPN’s obfuscated servers (when available) can help bypass censorship. Conclusion ProtonVPN is a strong option for users who want a privacy-first VPN backed by a reputable company in Switzerland. Its combination of no-logs policy, diskless servers, modern protocols, Secure Core routing, and open-source clients make it appealing to those who value security and transparency. As with any VPN, prospective users should evaluate current features, independent audits, and pricing to ensure it meets their specific needs.#1#
