ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail. Built with privacy as its core principle, ProtonVPN aims to offer strong security, transparency, and user-friendly applications across major platforms. Its Swiss jurisdiction and commitment to open-source clients make it a popular choice for users seeking a trustworthy VPN. Key features and privacy ProtonVPN uses AES-256 encryption, modern tunneling protocols (WireGuard and OpenVPN), and a strict no-logs policy. One standout feature is Secure Core: traffic is routed through privacy-friendly countries’ servers before exiting through a standard server, adding an extra layer of protection against network-level attacks or compromised exit nodes. ProtonVPN also integrates Tor over VPN, enabling direct access to the Tor network without a separate Tor Browser setup. Platforms and ease of use ProtonVPN provides apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus manual configuration options for routers. The interfaces are clean and accessible for beginners, while offering advanced settings—like split tunneling, kill switch, and custom DNS—for experienced users. The company publishes transparency reports and has open-sourced many client apps, which enhances trust and allows independent audits. Performance and streaming In recent years ProtonVPN has invested in an expanding server network, improving speeds and reducing congestion. WireGuard support gives a noticeable boost in latency and throughput for compatible devices. ProtonVPN supports streaming services and P2P on select servers, though streaming performance can vary depending on server choice and the ever-changing blocking efforts by streaming platforms. Plans and pricing ProtonVPN offers a free tier with limited speeds and a smaller pool of servers, which is useful for casual or privacy-conscious users who don’t need high throughput. Paid plans unlock faster servers, Secure Core, Tor servers, and simultaneous connections. While ProtonVPN’s paid plans are often pricier than some competitors, the combination of privacy features, Swiss jurisdiction, and transparency can justify the cost for many users. Considerations No VPN can guarantee absolute anonymity; users should combine VPN use with safe browsing habits. Evaluate whether Secure Core, Tor over VPN, or a large streaming-optimized network matters for your needs. Also consider desktop and mobile app maturity and customer support responsiveness. Conclusion ProtonVPN is a strong choice for users prioritizing privacy, transparency, and robust security features. Its Swiss base, no-logs stance, Secure Core architecture, and cross-platform apps make it well-suited for journalists, activists, and privacy-minded consumers. For those who value open-source clients and extra privacy protections, ProtonVPN is worth considering.#1#
