ProtonVPN is a virtual private network (VPN) service built with privacy and security as primary goals. Created by the team behind Proton Mail and headquartered in Switzerland, ProtonVPN emphasizes strong encryption, transparent practices, and protections that take advantage of Switzerland’s favorable privacy laws. It aims to make internet browsing more private and secure without demanding technical expertise from users. Core features include modern encryption protocols, support for WireGuard and OpenVPN, and a built-in kill switch that prevents data leaks if the VPN connection drops. ProtonVPN’s “Secure Core” architecture routes traffic through multiple servers in privacy-friendly countries before it exits to the public internet, reducing the risk that a single compromised server or hostile network could reveal a user’s IP address. The service also supports Tor over VPN for users who want easy access to the Tor network while adding an extra privacy layer. ProtonVPN’s apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, and the client software is open source. Open-source apps allow experts and the broader community to inspect the code for security problems. ProtonVPN has undergone independent security audits and publishes transparency reports, which helps build trust in its no-logs policy. The company states it does not log users’ browsing activity, and Swiss jurisdiction provides additional legal safeguards against intrusive data requests. Performance is competitive: WireGuard provides faster connection speeds and more efficient connections than older protocols, and ProtonVPN maintains a global server network to reduce latency for most regions. Specific speeds will vary with network conditions, server load, and the user’s local ISP, but many users find ProtonVPN suitable for everyday browsing, video streaming, and secure remote work. ProtonVPN also supports P2P/torrenting on select servers and offers streaming-optimized servers for access to region-locked content, though access to particular streaming libraries can change over time. ProtonVPN offers a range of plans, including a free tier with limited features but no data caps, and several paid tiers that unlock faster servers, Secure Core, and multi-device support. The pricing and included features make it flexible for individuals and families who need different levels of privacy and performance. No service is perfect. ProtonVPN can be more expensive than some competitors at higher tiers, and advanced privacy features may be overkill for casual users. Additionally, while its streaming and P2P support is solid, it may not consistently unblock every geo-restricted service in every region. In summary, ProtonVPN is a strong choice for users who prioritize privacy, transparency, and security. Its Swiss base, no-logs stance, Secure Core routing, and open-source clients make it well suited for privacy-conscious individuals, journalists, and activists, as well as people looking for a reliable, user-friendly VPN for everyday use.#1#
