protonvpn

ProtonVPN is a privacy-focused virtual private network (VPN) developed by the team behind ProtonMail. Based in Switzerland, ProtonVPN emphasizes strong privacy protections under favorable Swiss laws, a transparent approach to security, and tools designed to keep users’ internet activity private and secure. Core features and security ProtonVPN uses robust encryption and modern VPN protocols including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2. It offers a strict no-logs policy and operates Secure Core servers — a multi-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before it exits to the public internet. This reduces the risk of traffic correlation attacks and adds an extra layer of protection for users needing stronger anonymity. ProtonVPN also supports Tor over VPN, allowing direct access to the Tor network without configuring the Tor Browser manually. Privacy and trust ProtonVPN benefits from transparency initiatives: its apps are open source, and the service has undergone independent security audits. Being headquartered in Switzerland means ProtonVPN is outside of EU and US jurisdictions and benefits from Swiss privacy laws, which can offer additional legal protections for user data. The company’s connection to ProtonMail further positions it within a privacy-first ecosystem. Usability and platforms ProtonVPN provides native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus a command-line client for advanced users. Apps include essential features such as a killswitch (which cuts internet access if the VPN connection drops), DNS leak protection, and split tunneling on supported platforms. Setup is straightforward, and the interface is accessible for beginners while still offering advanced settings for power users. Performance and streaming Performance is generally solid, especially when using nearby servers or WireGuard, which tends to offer faster speeds and lower latency. ProtonVPN supports P2P traffic on designated servers and works with many streaming services, although streaming performance can vary by region and server load. Plans and pricing ProtonVPN offers a limited free tier with access to a handful of servers and moderate speeds, making it useful for basic privacy needs. Paid tiers unlock Secure Core, more global servers, multi-device connections, and higher speeds. Pricing is competitive for a privacy-focused provider, though some users may find it costlier than large mainstream VPNs. Who should use ProtonVPN? ProtonVPN is well suited for privacy-conscious users, journalists, activists, and anyone who values transparency and strong legal protections. It’s a good choice for people who want a trustworthy VPN backed by open-source software and independent audits. Drawbacks Potential downsides include fewer servers than some large competitors and variable speeds depending on location. Prices for top-tier plans may be higher than budget VPNs. In summary, ProtonVPN is a reliable, privacy-centered VPN with strong security features and transparent practices, making it a solid option for users prioritizing privacy and trustworthiness.#1#
