ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by Proton AG, the Swiss company best known for ProtonMail. Built around privacy and security, ProtonVPN aims to give users a simple way to encrypt internet traffic, hide their IP address, and access content securely across devices. Its design emphasizes transparency, strong cryptography, and jurisdictional advantages arising from Switzerland’s favorable privacy laws. Core features ProtonVPN supports modern VPN protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, offering a mix of speed and security options. WireGuard provides high performance with a lightweight codebase, while OpenVPN and IKEv2 remain reliable choices for compatibility and stability. ProtonVPN includes essential protections like a kill switch (to block traffic if the VPN connection drops), DNS leak protection, and split tunneling on many platforms. Privacy and security differentiators ProtonVPN promotes a strict no-logs policy and operates under Swiss jurisdiction, which generally provides stronger privacy protections than many other countries. The service also offers Secure Core servers — a multi-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before it exits to the public internet, increasing resistance to network-level surveillance. Proton has invested in server security practices such as diskless (RAM-only) servers in many locations to prevent persistent data storage. The company has published transparency reports and undergone independent security audits of parts of its infrastructure and apps, reinforcing its privacy claims. Plans and pricing ProtonVPN provides a free tier that gives basic VPN access and a limited set of servers without data caps — making it a useful entry-level option for casual users. Paid tiers add access to the full server network, higher speeds, Secure Core, streaming-optimized servers, P2P support on select servers, and additional features like NetShield (ad and malware blocking). Plans are available for individuals, families, and businesses, and Proton offers multi-platform apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and routers. Performance and usability Users generally find ProtonVPN straightforward to set up and use. WireGuard delivers competitive speeds for streaming and downloads, especially on paid plans and nearby server locations. However, performance can vary depending on server load and geographic distance. The free plan may be slower due to restricted server access and higher demand. Use cases and considerations ProtonVPN is well-suited for privacy-conscious users, journalists, activists, and anyone who values a trustworthy provider with transparent practices. It’s also a practical choice for secure public Wi‑Fi use, safe torrenting (on designated servers), and bypassing some geo-restrictions. Potential users should note that advanced features like Secure Core are reserved for paid tiers, and no VPN can guarantee absolute anonymity — combining a VPN with other privacy tools (Tor, secure browsers) is advised for high-risk scenarios. In summary, ProtonVPN offers a robust privacy-first VPN solution with modern protocols, thoughtful security features, and a free tier to get started, making it a strong option for users prioritizing transparency and data protection.#1#
