ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service from the team behind ProtonMail, built with a strong focus on privacy and secure communications. Headquartered in Switzerland, which has robust privacy protections and favorable data‑protection laws, ProtonVPN markets itself to users who prioritize confidentiality, transparency, and open-source software. Core privacy and security ProtonVPN operates under a strict no-logs policy and uses modern cryptographic protocols to protect user traffic. It supports WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 — giving users a balance of high speeds and proven security. Key safety features include a system-wide kill switch that blocks internet access if the VPN connection drops, DNS leak protection, and optional Tor over VPN for seamless integration with the Tor network. ProtonVPN also provides Secure Core routing, which forwards traffic through privacy-friendly countries before it leaves the VPN network, adding an extra layer of protection against network-based attacks. Features and usability ProtonVPN offers native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, plus guides for configuring routers and a small selection of third-party clients. The interface is clean and approachable: quick-connect options for best available servers, server lists filtered by country or purpose (P2P, Tor, streaming), and settings for split tunneling on supported platforms. NetShield, an integrated ad and malware blocker, is available on paid tiers and can reduce trackers and unwanted content. Performance and streaming With WireGuard support and a global server network, ProtonVPN delivers competitive speeds for browsing, streaming, and gaming. Streaming-optimized servers are labeled for services like Netflix, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer, though streaming reliability can vary depending on geographic location and the streaming service’s anti‑VPN measures. Torrenting is allowed on P2P-designated servers, and the combination of high throughput and privacy protections makes ProtonVPN a sensible option for users who frequently download or seed files. Plans and pricing ProtonVPN has a free tier offering limited server access and lower speeds — useful for occasional users or those who want to test the service. Paid plans unlock faster servers, Secure Core, streaming servers, NetShield, and access to the full server network. Proton also bundles VPN service with other Proton products on higher plans, which may be attractive if you use ProtonMail or Proton Drive. Who it’s for ProtonVPN is well suited for privacy-conscious users, journalists, and activists, as well as everyday users wanting a reliable, transparent VPN. It balances strong technical protections with user-friendly apps. If you prioritize jurisdictional privacy, open-source software, and advanced features like Secure Core and Tor integration, ProtonVPN is worth considering.#1#
