ProtonVPN is a privacy-centered virtual private network developed by the team behind ProtonMail. Based in Switzerland, the service emphasizes strong legal protections, transparent practices, and features designed to protect user data and anonymity online. For individuals and organizations that prioritize privacy over purely marketing-led features, ProtonVPN presents a compelling option. Privacy and legal jurisdiction One of ProtonVPN’s headline advantages is its Swiss jurisdiction. Switzerland has robust privacy laws and is outside the main US and EU intelligence-sharing alliances, which provides a favorable legal backdrop for a no-logs VPN provider. ProtonVPN states a strict no-logs policy, meaning it does not store activity that could identify what users do online. As with any provider, users should review the company’s transparency reports and independent audits for the latest verifications. Security features ProtonVPN offers modern VPN protocols including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, along with AES-256 encryption for secure tunnels. It includes practical protections such as a system-wide kill switch to block traffic if the VPN connection drops, DNS leak protection, and support for split tunneling on many platforms. A distinctive feature is Secure Core, ProtonVPN’s multi-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before exiting to the open internet — useful for users facing high-risk threats or extra surveillance. Apps and compatibility ProtonVPN provides apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, plus manual configuration options for routers. Many of its apps are open source and have undergone third-party audits, adding transparency to the implementation. The interface is generally user-friendly: beginners can connect with a single click, while advanced users can access server selection, protocol choice, and custom routing. Performance and use cases Performance depends on server selection, protocol, and plan tier. Using WireGuard and nearby servers typically yields the best speeds. ProtonVPN supports P2P traffic on select servers, works with many streaming services, and offers dedicated servers for high-bandwidth use. The service includes a free tier that provides basic access with limited speeds and server options — a good way to test the service before upgrading. Considerations Paid plans are required for advanced features such as Secure Core, faster servers, and simultaneous connections beyond the free tier limits. Pricing is competitive but varies by billing period and promotional offers. As with all VPNs, absolute anonymity isn’t guaranteed; pairing ProtonVPN with good personal privacy practices is essential. Conclusion ProtonVPN is a strong choice for privacy-conscious users who want a transparent, security-minded VPN backed by Swiss law. Its feature set, audited clients, and additional protections like Secure Core make it suitable for both everyday privacy and higher-risk use cases.#1#
