ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by the team behind Proton Mail. Built with a focus on privacy and transparency, ProtonVPN aims to give individuals safe, uncensored access to the internet while protecting their data from surveillance, tracking, and network-based attacks. Core features and security At its core, ProtonVPN uses industry-standard encryption (OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard support) to secure traffic between a user’s device and ProtonVPN servers. The provider is based in Switzerland, which has strong privacy laws and is outside of major surveillance alliances. ProtonVPN maintains a strict no-logs policy and subjects its infrastructure to independent audits and transparency reporting, which reinforces trust. A distinctive feature is Secure Core, a multi-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before it exits to the public internet. This design makes it harder for adversaries to correlate incoming and outgoing traffic. ProtonVPN also offers Tor over VPN for users who want to combine VPN protection with access to the Tor network, and a built-in kill switch that blocks internet access if the VPN connection drops. Free plan and paid tiers ProtonVPN provides a limited free plan that stands out from many competitors because it has no data cap—though it limits available servers and speeds. Paid plans (Plus and Visionary tiers) unlock faster servers, more simultaneous connections, access to Secure Core, streaming-optimized servers, and advanced features like P2P support. Pricing is competitive and Proton periodically discounts annual subscriptions. Performance and usability In recent years ProtonVPN has improved performance, particularly with WireGuard support, which offers lower latency and higher throughput compared to older protocols. Native apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, and a straightforward interface makes it approachable for non-technical users while still offering advanced settings for power users. Use cases and limitations ProtonVPN is well-suited for privacy-conscious users, journalists, activists, remote workers, and anyone wanting to protect personal data on public Wi-Fi. It also works for accessing geo-restricted streaming content on many popular platforms, though results vary by region and service. Limitations include potentially higher cost for top-tier plans and occasional server congestion on the free tier. Conclusion ProtonVPN is a solid choice for people who prioritize privacy, transparency, and security. Its combination of Swiss jurisdiction, no-logs policy, Secure Core architecture, and a genuinely useful free plan make it a reliable option among VPN services. Consider your needs—speed, server locations, and streaming requirements—when choosing a plan.#1#
