ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by the team behind Proton Mail. Built with privacy as a core principle and headquartered in Switzerland, ProtonVPN aims to give users secure, private access to the internet without intrusive logging or data-harvesting practices. It appeals to both everyday users who want safer public Wi-Fi browsing and privacy-conscious individuals who need advanced protections and features. Security and privacy are ProtonVPN’s strongest selling points. The service uses strong encryption (AES-256) combined with secure key exchange and supports modern VPN protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2. ProtonVPN emphasizes perfect forward secrecy and DNS leak protection, and includes a system-wide kill switch to block traffic if the VPN connection drops. The company has made significant portions of its client code open-source and its apps have been subject to independent security audits, reflecting a commitment to transparency. One distinctive feature is Secure Core, ProtonVPN’s multi-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before it leaves the VPN network. This adds a layer of protection against network-level surveillance and malicious exit nodes. The service also offers “Tor over VPN” access, allowing users to route traffic to the Tor network with a single click — useful for users seeking an additional layer of anonymity. ProtonVPN’s NetShield feature provides DNS-level ad and tracker blocking on supported plans, improving privacy and reducing exposure to malicious domains. ProtonVPN provides a range of plans, including a free tier that offers a limited set of server locations and basic protection. Paid plans unlock faster servers, access to high-bandwidth or P2P-optimized servers, streaming-optimized locations, and advanced features like Secure Core and NetShield. The network covers servers in dozens of countries, and the service supports P2P file sharing on designated servers. Speed can be excellent, especially when using WireGuard, though actual performance depends on server load and your local connection. Usability is solid: ProtonVPN has native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, plus support for some router configurations. The user interface is approachable for beginners while offering configurable options for advanced users, such as split tunneling on supported platforms and custom DNS settings. No VPN is perfect, and ProtonVPN is no exception. Some advanced features are gated behind higher-tier subscriptions, and speeds may vary by server and region. Additionally, in jurisdictions that actively block VPN traffic, connecting can require extra setup or obfuscation. In summary, ProtonVPN is a strong choice for users prioritizing privacy and transparency. Its Swiss base, no-logs stance, Secure Core routing, Tor integration, and open-source approach make it especially attractive to security-minded users, while the free tier and accessible apps make it a practical option for everyday privacy needs as well.#1#
