otonVPN: Secure, Private, and User-Friendly VPN from Switzerland Keywords ProtonVPN, VPN, Secure Core, WireGuard, privacy, no-logs, ProtonMail, NetShield, Tor over VPN, VPN review Description ProtonVPN is a Swiss-based VPN focused on privacy and security, offering Secure Core multi-hop, WireGuard speeds, a strict no-logs policy, and apps for major platforms — including a free tier. Content ProtonVPN is a privacy-focused virtual private network developed by the team behind ProtonMail. Founded with the goal of protecting user communications and online activity, ProtonVPN combines strong cryptography, privacy-friendly jurisdiction, and user-friendly apps to appeal to both beginners and advanced users. Core features and security ProtonVPN uses modern VPN protocols including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, giving users a balance of speed and compatibility. WireGuard support in particular delivers faster connections with minimal overhead, while OpenVPN and IKEv2 provide wide platform support. The service enforces AES-256 encryption and robust key exchange mechanisms to keep traffic confidential. A distinguishing feature is Secure Core, ProtonVPN’s multi-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries (for example, Switzerland or Iceland) before exiting to the public internet. This adds an extra layer of protection against network-level surveillance and targeted attacks on exit servers. Other protections include a built-in kill switch, DNS leak protection, and NetShield — an optional DNS-level ad, tracker, and malware blocker. Privacy and jurisdiction ProtonVPN is based in Switzerland, a country with strong privacy laws and outside the 14 Eyes surveillance alliance. The company maintains a strict no-logs policy and has taken steps to be transparent about its security posture, including independent audits and public security disclosures. For users who prioritize privacy, ProtonVPN’s history and technical safeguards are major selling points. Features and usability ProtonVPN supports P2P on select servers, offers “Tor over VPN” access to .onion sites from within the app, and provides split tunneling on some platforms so you can choose which apps use the VPN. Native apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and select routers; there’s also support for Android TV. Plans and performance ProtonVPN has a free tier that offers limited server access and medium speeds — useful for casual users who need basic protection. Paid plans unlock high-speed servers, Secure Core, streaming-optimized servers, and more simultaneous connections. Real-world speeds are generally good, especially with WireGuard enabled, though peak performance depends on server choice and geographic distance. Considerations No VPN can guarantee total anonymity, and advanced users should combine VPNs with other privacy tools as needed. Some advanced features are limited to higher-tier plans, and the free plan has throughput restrictions. Overall, ProtonVPN is a strong option for users who want clear privacy commitments, modern protocols, and a polished, easy-to-use experience.#1#
