ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by Proton AG, the Swiss company best known for Proton Mail. It’s designed to give individuals and businesses a straightforward way to protect their online privacy, bypass geo-restrictions, and secure internet connections on public Wi‑Fi. ProtonVPN emphasizes strong privacy practices, open-source software, and transparent policies — qualities that make it a popular choice for users who prioritize data protection. Key features - Privacy-first jurisdiction: ProtonVPN is based in Switzerland, which has strong privacy laws and is outside EU and U.S. surveillance alliances. The company states a strict no-logs policy. - Secure Core (multi-hop): Traffic can be routed through multiple ProtonVPN servers (including those in privacy-friendly countries) to provide extra protection against network-based attacks and correlation. - Strong encryption and protocols: ProtonVPN uses AES-256 encryption and supports modern VPN protocols such as OpenVPN and WireGuard for a balance of security and speed. - Open-source and audited apps: The client apps are open-source and have undergone security audits, increasing transparency and trustworthiness. - Tor over VPN: Built-in support for routing traffic through the Tor network (on specific servers) without using the Tor Browser. - Kill switch and split tunneling: Features that prevent leaks and let you choose which apps route through the VPN (availability may vary by platform). - Broad platform support: Native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, plus guides for routers. Plans and performance ProtonVPN offers a free tier with access to several countries and limited speeds — a useful option for casual privacy needs and for testing the service. Paid tiers (Basic, Plus, and Visionary) unlock faster servers, Secure Core, P2P support, and streaming-optimized servers. Speeds are generally competitive, especially on WireGuard, but real-world performance can vary with server load and distance. Use cases - Secure browsing on public Wi‑Fi - Accessing geo-restricted streaming content - Protecting privacy from ISP tracking - Safe P2P activity (on supported servers) - Adding a Tor layer for sensitive browsing Pros and cons Pros: Strong privacy stance, Secure Core multi-hop, open-source clients, reliable feature set. Cons: Free plan speed limits, some advanced features reserved for higher-tier subscriptions, occasional variability in streaming access. Conclusion ProtonVPN is a solid choice for users who want a privacy-focused VPN backed by transparent practices and modern security features. Evaluate the free tier to test basic functionality, then consider paid plans if you need higher speeds, streaming, or multi-hop protection.#1#
