ProtonVPN is a privacy-focused virtual private network developed by the team behind ProtonMail. Built with a strong emphasis on security and transparency, ProtonVPN aims to give users a safer, more private way to browse the internet, whether they’re on public Wi-Fi or trying to access content from another region. Security and privacy ProtonVPN uses industry-standard encryption (AES-256 with strong key exchange) and secure VPN protocols to protect your traffic. Key privacy features include a strict no-logs policy and headquarters in Switzerland, which has robust privacy laws compared with many other jurisdictions. ProtonVPN also offers Secure Core — a multi-hop feature that routes traffic through privacy-friendly servers (including locations in Switzerland and Iceland) before it reaches the public internet, adding resilience against network-based attacks. Features ProtonVPN’s feature set covers most modern VPN expectations: a kill switch that blocks internet access if the VPN connection drops, DNS leak protection, and split tunneling on some platforms to let you route specific apps outside the VPN. It supports Tor over VPN so you can connect to the Tor network through ProtonVPN without running the Tor Browser separately. Proton offers a free tier with limited servers and speeds, alongside paid plans that unlock more servers, higher speeds, and additional features. The official apps are open source and have undergone independent security audits, increasing transparency and trust. Performance and streaming Performance varies by server, location, and plan level. Paid plans typically provide faster speeds and priority access to high-capacity servers. ProtonVPN can be suitable for streaming and P2P on specific servers, though streaming performance and access to geo-restricted libraries depend on the destination service and individual server behavior. If streaming is a priority, check current server recommendations and reviews since streaming support can change. Ease of use and platform support ProtonVPN offers native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus configuration guides for routers. The user interface is generally straightforward: sign up, install the app, choose a server, and connect. Advanced users can customize protocol choices and enable Secure Core or Tor routing as needed. Considerations No VPN can provide absolute anonymity—VPNs protect network-level privacy but don’t replace safe browsing habits. Trust in the provider is essential; ProtonVPN mitigates this by being transparent, open source, and audited, but users should still review the latest privacy policy and independent assessments. Pricing and server availability change over time, so compare current plans before subscribing. Conclusion ProtonVPN is a strong choice for users who prioritize privacy, security, and transparency, especially those already in the Proton ecosystem. With a mix of advanced features, audited open-source apps, and a free tier, it caters to both casual users and privacy-conscious power users.#1#
