ProtonVPN positions itself as a privacy-first virtual private network built by the same team behind ProtonMail. Headquartered in Switzerland, it benefits from strong privacy laws and a commitment to transparency that appeals to users concerned about data protection and government surveillance. Security and protocols ProtonVPN uses modern, industry-standard encryption (AES-256) and supports multiple VPN protocols including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2. WireGuard is widely praised for its speed and efficiency, while OpenVPN and IKEv2 offer broad compatibility. ProtonVPN also provides a system-wide kill switch to prevent leaks if the VPN connection drops, DNS leak protection, and options for split tunneling on supported platforms. Privacy-first features A core selling point is ProtonVPN’s no-logs policy and the company’s Swiss jurisdiction, which reduces the likelihood of intrusive data requests. ProtonVPN’s apps are open-source and the service has undergone independent security audits, enhancing trust through verifiability. For extra anonymity, the Secure Core feature routes traffic through multiple servers in privacy-friendly countries before exiting to the internet, creating a multi-hop connection that adds resilience against certain types of surveillance. Performance and usability ProtonVPN offers apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus guidance for router setup. Servers are available in many countries, with some optimized for P2P/torrents and others for streaming. Paid tiers typically deliver faster speeds and access to more servers; the free plan provides a limited selection of servers and moderate speeds but remains a notable option for casual users or those who want to test the service. Extra protections and conveniences NetShield, ProtonVPN’s DNS-based blocker, can filter ads, trackers, and known malware domains — reducing exposure and improving page load times. The service also includes Tor-over-VPN servers for easy access to the Tor network without requiring a separate Tor browser, useful for users seeking additional anonymity layers. Streaming users will find dedicated servers that work with many popular services, though performance can depend on geographic proximity and server load. Who is it for? ProtonVPN is a strong choice for privacy-conscious users, journalists, and travelers who want a transparent, well-audited VPN from a reputable company. Its mix of robust security, open-source software, and both free and premium tiers makes it suitable for a wide range of users — from those seeking basic privacy to those who need advanced features like multi-hop routing and DNS-level filtering. Before choosing any VPN, consider your needs for speed, server locations, and specific features like P2P or streaming, and review current pricing and audits for up-to-date information.#1#
