ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by Proton AG, the Switzerland-based company best known for Proton Mail. It focuses on privacy-first design, combining modern encryption and open-source software with a legal domicile in Switzerland — a country with strong privacy laws. For users who want a trustworthy VPN that emphasizes data protection and transparency, ProtonVPN is a prominent option. Privacy and Jurisdiction One of ProtonVPN’s main selling points is its Swiss jurisdiction. Switzerland is outside the EU and US surveillance alliances, and it has robust privacy protections for users. ProtonVPN maintains a strict no-logs policy, meaning it does not record users’ online activity. Its commitment to transparency is reinforced through publicly available privacy policies and app source code, helping users verify what the service does and does not collect. Security and Features ProtonVPN offers modern VPN protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, enabling secure and efficient connections across platforms. The service uses strong encryption standards and perfect forward secrecy to protect session keys. Unique to ProtonVPN is Secure Core, a multi-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries (for example, Switzerland and Iceland) before it exits to the public internet. This adds an extra layer of protection against network-level adversaries. Additional features include NetShield, an integrated ad, tracker, and malware blocker available on paid plans, and built-in support for Tor over VPN, which allows users to route traffic through the Tor network easily. ProtonVPN also supports P2P on specific servers and maintains dedicated streaming-optimized servers for accessing region-restricted content. Transparency and Audits ProtonVPN publishes apps for major platforms — Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS — and provides browser and router support. The company has made client applications open-source, allowing independent inspection of code. ProtonVPN has also undergone third-party audits and continuously updates its software to address security findings and improve reliability. Plans and Performance ProtonVPN offers a free tier with access to a limited selection of servers and basic speeds, making it useful for casual privacy needs or testing the service. Paid plans (such as Plus or Visionary tiers) expand the server choice, enable Secure Core access, unlock NetShield, and increase maximum speeds and simultaneous connections. Performance is generally good, with WireGuard providing faster throughput in many cases, though real-world speeds depend on factors like server load, distance, and local network conditions. Who It’s For ProtonVPN suits privacy-conscious users, journalists, activists, and anyone who values a VPN provider with a transparent, security-oriented approach. The free tier is attractive for entry-level users, while the advanced features and multi-hop architecture appeal to those with stronger privacy requirements. In summary, ProtonVPN combines solid technical features, a privacy-respecting jurisdiction, and transparent development practices, making it a compelling choice for users who prioritize online privacy and security.#1#
