ProtonVPN was developed by the team behind ProtonMail and markets itself as a privacy-first virtual private network. Headquartered in Switzerland, a country known for robust privacy laws, ProtonVPN emphasizes protecting user data through technical safeguards and legal jurisdiction. Its core features make it a solid choice for users who want strong privacy guarantees combined with practical features for everyday use. Security and privacy lie at the heart of ProtonVPN. The service uses strong encryption (AES-256) and supports modern VPN protocols including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, allowing a balance of speed, compatibility, and security across platforms. ProtonVPN enforces a strict no-logs policy and its apps and infrastructure have been subject to independent audits, reinforcing transparency about their privacy claims. Additional protections include a system-wide kill switch to prevent data leaks if the VPN connection drops and DNS leak protection. One distinctive feature is Secure Core, a multi-hop option that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before exiting to the public internet. This architecture helps defend against advanced threats and network-based tracking by making it harder to correlate incoming and outgoing traffic. ProtonVPN also offers built-in Tor over VPN access for users who want to combine the anonymity benefits of the Tor network with VPN protection. Usability and ecosystem support are strong points. ProtonVPN provides apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, plus configuration options for routers. The apps are user-friendly for beginners yet offer advanced settings like split tunneling and custom DNS for experienced users. ProtonVPN has both free and paid tiers: the free plan gives access to basic servers with limited speeds, while paid plans unlock more servers, faster connections, streaming-optimized locations, and Secure Core. ProtonVPN works well for streaming and P2P, though streaming performance depends on your plan and server choice. The service permits P2P traffic on select servers and maintains explicit guidance to help users choose the best locations. NetShield, ProtonVPN’s built-in blocker, filters ads, trackers, and malware domains for a cleaner browsing experience. No VPN is perfect: ProtonVPN can be pricier than some competitors, and speeds vary by region and server load. The free plan is limited compared to paid options, and some advanced features are locked behind higher-tier subscriptions. Overall, ProtonVPN is a reputable option for privacy-conscious users who want transparent policies, advanced security features, and cross-platform support. It’s particularly suitable if jurisdiction and independent audits matter to you, and it offers a practical balance of privacy and functionality for everyday internet protection.#1#
