ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by Proton AG, the company behind Proton Mail. Built with privacy as a core principle, ProtonVPN positions itself as a secure, user-friendly option for individuals who want to protect their online activity, bypass censorship, or access geo-restricted content. Headquartered in Switzerland, a country with strong privacy laws, ProtonVPN emphasizes minimal logging, strong encryption, and transparency through open-source clients and independent audits. Key features - Strong encryption and protocols: ProtonVPN supports modern VPN protocols such as WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2, using robust ciphers (e.g., AES-256). WireGuard is often recommended for a balance of speed and security. - Secure Core: A unique multi-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before exiting to the public internet, protecting against network-based attacks and unsafe exit servers. - No-logs policy and Swiss jurisdiction: ProtonVPN states it keeps no logs that can identify users. Being based in Switzerland helps reduce the risk of intrusive government requests compared to some other jurisdictions. - Tor over VPN: Built-in support to route traffic through the Tor network for an extra anonymity layer without running a separate Tor browser. - Free tier and paid plans: ProtonVPN offers a free plan with limited servers and speeds, plus Plus and Visionary tiers that unlock higher speeds, more servers, P2P support, and additional features. Proton Mail users can bundle services for savings. - Cross-platform and open source: Apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. ProtonVPN’s clients and some server components are open source and have undergone independent security audits. - Kill switch and split tunneling: Features to prevent IP leaks if the VPN connection drops and to route selected apps through or outside the VPN tunnel. Pros and cons ProtonVPN is notable for its privacy-focused design and transparent development. Its Secure Core and Tor integration are valuable for advanced privacy needs. The free tier is a welcome option for cautious users. On the downside, top-tier plans can be pricier than some competitors, and speeds may vary depending on server load and user location. Getting started 1. Sign up at protonvpn.com and choose a plan (free or paid). 2. Download the app for your device and install it. 3. Log in, select a server (or use Quick Connect), and hit Connect. 4. Configure preferences like the kill switch, startup behavior, or split tunneling as needed. Conclusion ProtonVPN is a solid choice for users prioritizing privacy, transparency, and strong technical safeguards.
