ProtonVPN is a virtual private network (VPN) service developed by Proton AG, the same team behind ProtonMail. Built with privacy as a primary goal, ProtonVPN aims to protect users’ internet activity from surveillance, tracking, and censorship by routing traffic through encrypted tunnels to remote servers. Headquartered in Switzerland, a country known for strong privacy laws, ProtonVPN emphasizes transparent practices and security-first design. Key features include modern VPN protocols — notably WireGuard and OpenVPN — which balance speed and security. ProtonVPN also offers Secure Core, a unique double-hop architecture that routes traffic through privacy-friendly countries before exiting to the wider internet. This adds an extra layer of protection against targeted attacks and network-level adversaries. For users who want deep anonymity, ProtonVPN supports Tor over VPN, enabling direct access to the Tor network through the VPN app. Privacy protections are central to ProtonVPN’s appeal. The service has a strict no-logs policy, DNS leak protection, and an automatic kill switch that blocks internet traffic if the VPN connection drops. Proton’s applications are open source and have undergone independent security audits, which helps build trust that the client behaves as advertised. ProtonVPN offers both free and paid tiers. The free plan is rare among reputable VPN services: it provides access to a limited set of servers and moderate speeds without data caps, suitable for basic browsing and occasional secure use. Paid plans unlock higher speeds, access to the full server network (including Secure Core locations), streaming-capable servers, P2P support, and multi-device connections. There’s also a top-tier plan that bundles ProtonMail and other privacy services for those who want a broader privacy suite. Performance depends on server choice, proximity, and time-of-day load. For best speeds, choose a nearby server or WireGuard connections. When maximum privacy matters, select Secure Core servers or route through Tor. ProtonVPN’s apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, and setup guides are provided for routers and manual configuration where needed. How to choose ProtonVPN: pick the free plan to test reliability and basic features; upgrade if you need streaming, faster connections, or advanced privacy options. Always enable the kill switch and DNS leak protection, keep your client updated, and prefer WireGuard for a balance of speed and security. In summary, ProtonVPN is a solid choice for users prioritizing privacy and transparency. Its Swiss jurisdiction, combination of modern protocols, Secure Core routing, and commitment to open-source software make it especially attractive for privacy-conscious individuals and professionals.#1#
