ProtonVPN is a virtual private network service developed by Proton AG, the Switzerland-based company best known for Proton Mail. Built around privacy and security, ProtonVPN aims to give users strong online anonymity, secure connections, and a trustworthy policy environment anchored by Switzerland’s favorable privacy laws. Core privacy and security Privacy is central to ProtonVPN’s design. The service enforces a strict no-logs policy, which has been independently audited, meaning user activity is not recorded or retained on company servers. ProtonVPN uses modern encryption ciphers (AES-256) and secure tunneling protocols — including OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard — to protect traffic between devices and VPN servers. Additional safeguards include a built-in kill switch that blocks network traffic if the VPN connection drops, DNS leak protection, and support for Tor over VPN for users who want extra anonymity. Secure Core and server network A standout feature is Secure Core, which routes traffic through multiple hardened servers in privacy-friendly jurisdictions (such as Switzerland and Iceland) before exiting to the public internet. This multi-hop approach mitigates risks from compromised exit servers and enhances resistance to certain nation-state threats. ProtonVPN operates a large network of servers across many countries, including specialized servers for P2P file-sharing and dedicated streaming-optimized endpoints to improve access to geo-restricted content. Open-source apps and audits Transparency is another pillar of ProtonVPN’s approach. Desktop and mobile apps have been open-sourced and subjected to independent security audits, allowing experts to review code and verify the absence of backdoors or suspicious behavior. This openness increases trust and aligns with the company’s mission to provide verifiable privacy tools. Plans and usability ProtonVPN offers multiple subscription tiers, including a free plan that gives basic VPN access without logging but with limited server options and speeds. Paid tiers unlock faster connections, a bigger selection of servers, Secure Core, more simultaneous device connections, and extras like streaming-optimized servers. The apps are designed to be user-friendly while giving advanced configuration options for power users. Native clients are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and there are guides for routers and other platforms. Who should use ProtonVPN? ProtonVPN suits privacy-conscious individuals, journalists, activists, and anyone who wants a trustworthy VPN backed by transparency and strong legal protections. It’s also useful for everyday users who want to secure their connection on public Wi‑Fi, access region-locked streaming libraries, or safely perform P2P activities. Conclusion With a clear focus on privacy, open-source development, audited policies, and features like Secure Core and WireGuard support, ProtonVPN is a compelling option for users who prioritize security and transparency in their VPN choice.#1#
