protonvpn

ProtonVPN is a privacy-focused virtual private network (VPN) developed by the team behind Proton Mail and based in Switzerland. Built around strong privacy principles, ProtonVPN aims to give users secure, private access to the internet by encrypting traffic, hiding IP addresses, and offering advanced privacy tools such as Secure Core (multi-hop) servers and Tor over VPN. Core features and security ProtonVPN uses modern VPN protocols, including WireGuard and OpenVPN, to provide robust encryption and reliable connections across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Important safety features include a kill switch that stops traffic if the VPN disconnects, DNS leak protection, and a strict no-logs policy enforced under Swiss jurisdiction. ProtonVPN also operates Secure Core servers that route traffic through privacy-friendly countries before exiting to the public internet, adding an extra layer of protection against network-based threats. Free tier and paid plans One of ProtonVPN’s distinguishing traits is its generous free tier, which provides access to a limited selection of servers without data caps—making it useful for basic privacy needs. Paid plans expand server access, allow multiple simultaneous connections, enable faster speeds, and unlock advanced features such as Secure Core, streaming-optimized servers, and P2P support. Proton’s higher-tier plans are also often bundled with Proton Mail subscriptions for users who want a comprehensive privacy package. Performance and usability ProtonVPN’s apps are clean and easy to use, with one-click connections and server lists organized by country, specialty servers, and latency. WireGuard support improves performance for many users, and the ability to select specific servers for streaming or torrenting helps tailor the experience. Performance can vary by server and location; choosing nearby or high-capacity servers generally yields better speeds. Privacy and transparency ProtonVPN highlights transparency and has subjected its software to independent audits and regular updates. Being headquartered in Switzerland gives it a privacy-friendly legal backdrop. The company also continues to move toward diskless (RAM-only) servers and other technical measures that reduce risk of persistent data storage. When to use ProtonVPN ProtonVPN is a good choice for people who prioritize privacy, want a trustworthy free tier, or seek features like multi-hop routing and Tor integration. It’s also suitable for securing public Wi-Fi, accessing geo-restricted content, and safe P2P activity on designated servers. Considerations No VPN is perfect: speeds will vary by server and location, and advanced features may require higher-tier subscriptions. Still, ProtonVPN’s focus on privacy, transparent practices, and a usable free plan make it a strong option for both privacy-conscious users and general consumers.#1#
